Make Sure Your Wishes are Respected With a Florida Living Will ...

A Florida Living Will protects your interests should you become incapacitated and unable to make your own healthcare decisions. But will it be clear enough? When it comes down to it, the decisions your loved ones may face are rarely cut and dried. There is a lot of gray area in these situations that can lead to a circumvention of your Living Will.

You can protect yourself by being very specific about what you would like done in different scenarios. Suppose you can breathe on your own but are unconscious and unable to eat? What if you have reflexes but no brain activity? These are tough questions, but answering them as specifically as possible will help guide the people making your healthcare decisions.

It is important to designate a Florida Healthcare Surrogate using the proper legal form. This is a legal document and it will stand up better to court challenges from family members who may disagree with your Living Will. Be sure to choose your Healthcare Surrogate (also known as Healthcare Power of Attorney) wisely.

It can also be helpful to discuss your Living Will with loved ones long before it is needed. This allows interested parties to ask questions and discuss options with you. Hopefully they will be more comfortable with your wishes should the Living Will be needed.

Lastly, make sure your loved ones know you have a Living Will and where to locate it. ?If they cannot find it or do not know it exists, they cannot possibly put it into use.
