Nokia rolling out Windows Phone 7.8 for Lumia devices

Nokia has begun rolling out Windows Phone 7.8 for its Lumia devices running Windows Phone 7. According to a post on Nokia Conversations, the Lumia 510, 610, 710, 800 and 900 would be receiving the update.

To download the update, simply connect your phone to a computer via Zune for PC, or the Windows Phone app for Mac, and follow the instructions as shown in the video below.

Windows Phone 7.8 has the same homescreen as Windows Phone 8, and allows you to choose from three different tile sizes. There are also new options for the lock screen, such as a daily background image from Bing. Other features in the update include Internet Sharing, Bluetooth Sharing, imaging enhancements like Camera Extras, and apps such as Contact share, Play To and Nokia City Lens. Language support has also been expanded.

Microsoft had stated last year that none of the existing WP7 devices, including the Nokia 900, would be updated to Windows Phone 8. In order to avoid a riot outside their stores after it announced that, Microsoft promptly stated that Windows Phone 7.8?a sort of ?value pack?, if you will?would be rolled out for WP7 smartphones.

In an interview with The Verge at the time, Greg Sullivan, Senior Marketing Manager at Microsoft, stated, ?The nature of the investment [in Windows Phone 8] is primarily in areas that are not exploitable by existing hardware. To do the work to bring all of those elements to a platform that can't exploit them wasn't necessarily the most efficient use of resource.?

Lumia devices are finally getting the WP 7.8 update

?

While we understand that WP8 is a completely different beast altogether, it?s surprising that Microsoft couldn?t optimise it for single-core handsets. Perhaps the reason was the lower amount of RAM and not the CPU on the WP7 Lumia phones. However, not everyone cares about a dual-core CPU, NFC and all that jazz, so for them, the WP 7.8 update is more than welcome.

?When you pull that Lumia out of your pocket after you?ve received that 7.8 update, it will look and feel the same as a Windows Phone 8 device,? said Sullivan. This should keep many WP 7 users happy for the time being, until they decide whether to take the WP 8 plunge or not.

It mates the QWERTY hardware input that BlackBerry fans have known and loved while including a 3.1-inch touchscreen. Yes, it will have LTE, and there's already confirmed plans from Sprint, Verizon and Canadian providers to carry it -- although we've yet to learn pricing or a ship date. Check our hands-on with the Q10 for early impressions.

Don?t Repay the National Debt

Portrait of Prime Minister Sir Henry Pelham, oil on canvas, 1751. Prime Minister Sir Henry Pelham

Painting by William Hoare/National Portrait Gallery, London/Wikimedia Commons.

Britain and France were the superpowers of the 18th century, clashing repeatedly over the succession to the Spanish and Austrian thrones, overseas colonies, and eventually American independence. Britain?s most famous advantage in these struggles was its naval strength, but another important edge was its more sophisticated financial system. Advanced finance allowed the country to maximize the quantity of resources it was able to bring to bear during the acute crisis of war without crushing the underlying sources of economic growth through excessive taxation. Modern-day finance, of course, is generally much more sophisticated than even the cutting edge of the 18th century. But our former colonial masters did have one good idea that?s since been abandoned and deserves revival: perpetual bonds.

In 1752, Prime Minister Henry Pelham converted the entire outstanding stock of British debt into consolidated annuities that would become known as consols. The consols paid interest on an annual basis just like regular bonds, but with no requirement that the government ever redeem them by repaying the face value. Pelham created the bonds in order to reduce the government?s annual debt service costs. That isn?t our problem today. Instead, a modern-day consol would target another problem: political reluctance to take advantage of record-low interest rates.

As of Friday, the inflation-adjusted yield on 10-year Treasury bonds was negative 0.56 percent. Savers, in other words, want to pay the American government for the privilege of safeguarding their money. For the longest-dated bonds we sell, the 30-year Treasury bond, rates were 0.51 percent. That?s higher than zero, but far below the long-term average economic growth level. A sensible country would be taking advantage of that fact to finance some valuable public undertakings. Alternatively, if we think there?s nothing worth spending money on we could enact a big temporary tax cut aimed at reducing the unemployment rate and boosting the population?s skill level. Prolonged long-term unemployment, after all, has lasting effects that reduce the efficiency of the labor market and make it much harder to grow in the long term.

Another way of looking at it is that global financial markets are sending a clear signal to the United States. At a time when demand for goods and services is depressed, demand for American government debt is sky-high. The responsible choice is to let the supply meet the demand and borrow more.

But excessive worry about deficits is hard to purge from the system. One common objection, raised recently by Damon Linker is that ?the principal on a loan (even one taken at zero or negative interest) eventually has to be repaid.??

Except it doesn?t. Right now, the Treasury Department floats loans of a variety of durations, ranging from 28 days to 30 years. Lenders generally demand higher interest rates for longer-duration loans. But right now the rates on even the 30-year loans are extremely low. We could?and should?imitate Pelham and see what the market would demand for a loan that never has to be repaid. How high an interest rate would people demand for a loan like that? Well there?s no way to know without offering one on the marketplace. But right now 30-year bond rates are at never-before-seen lows, so paying a higher rate wouldn?t involve any unprecedented borrowing costs.

In exchange we?d gain some valuable information and confidence. Questions about how many perpetual bonds it?s prudent to issue would no longer be dominated by nonsense about the ?cleanest dirty shirt? and vague worries about hypothetical possible future refinancing crises. Instead we?d have a straightforward value question: Are the social and economic merits of additional borrowing worth the market interest rate or not? Well-targeted tax cuts and reasonably designed infrastructure stimulus should easily meet the test, while pork wouldn?t. But the outcome will depend on the actual state of market demand for government debt versus other investment vehicles. As demand for debt declines and growth prospects improve, interest rates will rise, meaning less borrowing will pass cost-benefit scrutiny.

Meanwhile, higher-but-low-by-historical-standards interest rates will in some ways be helpful to savers. Right now if you want to save money you face a fierce tradeoff between accepting low yields and taking on big risks. Consols offer a third way, a safe high-yield investment for those willing to lock their money up forever.

Most of all, perpetual bonds would help us move beyond the destructive politics of the grand bargain. The government could borrow money without adding to the national debt. Instead of obsessing over the debt-to-GDP ratio, we could tackle the present-day problem of unemployment and the medium-term barriers to growth. The current structure of American debt served us well for a long time, but times change. Successful countries manage their debt not just by borrowing prudent amounts, but by being smart about how they borrow. Today we face unusual fiscal circumstances?large projected future borrowing needs plus very low interest rates?and that calls for a little innovative thinking. Governments have rarely issued perpetual bonds, but our ability to offer them credibly is a strength of our very stable system of government. It?s time to take advantage of that to lock in today?s low borrowing costs. Forever.

Ham Radio, The Only Form of Communication After T-SHTF ...

By JM

We take communication for granted because if we want to talk to someone we have multiple ways of contacting them:? home phones, cell phones, email, and instant messaging.? We are used to instant gratification by calling or texting and pretty much getting an immediate response from virtually everyone on our contact list.? But after all the electronic infrastructure is gone, how will we get in contact with people?? Cell phones, landlines, and the internet will be useless. ?However there are multiple radio options.? Which ones will be of the best use and which ones will be basically useless?

General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS), Family Radio Service (FRS) and Multi-Use Radio Service (MURS) use basic handheld radios that are available commercially with pre-programmed?frequencies.? The person responsible for the GMRS radio must be licensed by the FCC, while FRS and MURS users do not require a license.? These are all basically high end walkie talkies.? The upside:? easy to use, inexpensive and requires no training.? The down side:? there are only 23 channels on GMRS, 14 on FRS and 5 on MURS and when all other forms of communications are unavailable they will be overloaded and basically useless.? Another drawback is that they are basically line of site communication only.? In other words, you will have to be very close to who you want to speak to for them to hear you.

Citizen Band (CB) is a step up from the previously mentioned radio communication possibilities.? CB radio is easy to use and requires no training or license.? CB allows communication on 40 pre-programmed?frequencies.? Like the other radio options the major problem is with the limited number of frequencies, they will be overloaded. ?Range is also limited to around 2 to 5 miles.

The GMRS, FRS, and MURS systems are only useful for small groups to communicate with each other while they are in proximity of each other.? They are not useful to communicate with other groups or people outside your immediate area.? CB radio falls in the same category.? Other forms of radio communications which are utilized by police, fire, EMS and military require outside equipment such as repeaters and infrastructure to operate properly.? In other words the radio is rather useless without the other equipment that you have no control over (or might not be able to acquire).

Amateur Radio (Ham) provides users with the most versatility when considering post SHTF communication scenarios.? The positive aspects of Ham radio are many: ?there are no pre-programmed?frequencies, a Ham operator can program the frequencies of their choice. ?Sure in a functioning government you may only transmit on certain frequencies but after T-SHTF an experienced Ham operator may use any frequency they wish.? Other pros:? range is unlimited, many Ham operators contact people around the world and you can pick up weather channels and short wave frequencies.? The downside:? an FCC license is needed, users much pass a written test to prove they are worthy. ?Additionally equipment is more expensive.

You may be thinking that you won?t need a license if T-SHTF, and that you?ll just buy a Ham radio and use it when the time comes.? You can do that but like other survival skills you need to practice in order to be proficient.? You will need experience in the use of the radio, building antennas, Morse Code and fine tuning of frequencies.? By getting an Amateur Radio License you can also network with other Hams and become familiar with ?Best practices? in Ham operation.? Hams are well versed in making home made antennas that work better then commercial antennas and even building radios.? These are skills that can be learned but it does take time.

A Ham radio operator can function effectively without the use of any other equipment, even though operators do frequently use repeaters on a day to day basis.? Another great aspect of Ham radio is this: you can do more then use voice communication.? Morse Code is a common form of communication in Ham radio.? Also operators commonly utilize ?packet radio?.? Packet radio allows transmission of photos, video, and text.? The text was the predecessor to email.? Yes indeed, Ham radio operators were using email before you were and all these forms of communications are available with just a radio.

Ham radios are versatile and can be base stations located in your home with high output power, mobile mounted in a vehicle with moderate output power, or portable small handheld radios with low power output that can be carried anywhere.

After T-SHTF communication will be difficult but needed. ?Land lines, cell phones, email, instant messaging, and the internet will be lost but Ham Radio will still be there.? When natural disasters like Katrina or Sandy strike, Ham Radio is there to allow emergency personnel to communicate because the normal communications channels are lost. ?When the government can?t communicate with each other during disaster, who do they call for help?? Amateur radio operators, because they know amateur radio is there and works when all other forms of communications fail.? That leads me to believe that after T-SHTF, Ham Radio will be the only form of communication available.

This post was contributed by JM, a certified Paramedic who is also a local EMS Coordinator. ?Look for more posts from him in the future. ?For more information on how to obtain a Ham Radio license check the ARRL Website for details.

Calls and Mail Increase Colon-Cancer Screening Rates

PHILADELPHIA?A mailing or phone call to help patients get screened for colorectal cancer significantly increases their chances of actually getting tested, according to a study published in the January issue of Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention by researchers at the Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson.

The research team, led by Ronald E. Myers, PhD, professor and director of division of population science, in the Department of Medical Oncology at Thomas Jefferson University, performed a randomized, controlled trial of 945 people aged 50-79 to test the impact of a new, preference-based navigation intervention, as opposed to standard mailing or usual care, on screening rates.

A third of the patients received a ?tailored" phone call to encourage them to perform their preferred screening test (colonoscopy vs. at-home blood stool test), plus a mailing of preferred information; another third were sent information on colonoscopy and a stool blood test kit; while the last third received no intervention.

Patients who received a phone call and/or mailing were almost three times as likely to undergo screening six months later compared to those who had no intervention. However, there was no significant difference between the phone and mailed interventions versus mailings only on screening rates.

While colorectal cancer screening rates are increasing in the United States, rates lag behind those for breast and cervical cancer screening. Screening and early detection of colon and rectal cancer holds tremendous promise for reducing the toll of colon and rectal cancer.

Animal shelters are real winners of 'Puppy Bowl'

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? There will be a winner and a loser every Super Bowl Sunday. But at the "Puppy Bowl," it's always a win for animal shelters.

The show provides national exposure to the shelters across the country that provide the puppy athletes and the kittens that star in the halftime show, and introduces viewers to the different breeds and animals that need homes, animal workers say. Many shelters see bumps in visits from viewers who are inspired to adopt a pet.

"It raises awareness for our shelter and others that take part," said Madeline Bernstein, president and CEO of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles. "It shows dogs in a happy, playful, fun way, which makes people think, 'Gee, I could play with a dog too.' You hope it will also stimulate adoptions, and if not, at least a positive attitude toward dogs, rather than they are just hairy and smelly."

The "Puppy Bowl," an annual two-hour TV special that mimics a football game with canine players, made its debut eight years ago on The Animal Planet. Dogs score touchdowns on a 10-by-19-foot gridiron carpet when they cross the goal line with a toy. There is a Most Valuable Pup award, a water bowl cam, a new lipstick cam (it's in the lips of the toys), slow-motion cameras, hedgehog referees, a puppy hot tub and a blimp with a crew of hamsters. Bios on each puppy player flash across the screen during close-ups of the action, letting viewers know how to find each animal for adoption.

Most of the puppies, however, are usually adopted by airtime since the show is filmed months ahead, said executive producer Melinda Toporoff, who is working on her fifth "Puppy Bowl." But Bernstein said the point is to show that animals just like the ones on the show can be found at any shelter at any time.

"A lot of people have come in during the last year and said, 'I want a dog just like Fumble,'" she said, referring to spcaLA's player entry in "Puppy Bowl VIII" who earned the game's Most Valuable Pup crown.

About 300 puppies and kittens have been featured on "Puppy Bowl" over the last decade, according to Petfinder.com, the country's largest online pet adoption database that helps cast the show's animal stars.

"Shelters and rescues are at capacity, and pet adoption is the responsible way to add to your family," said Sara Kent, who oversees outreach to the 14,000 shelters and rescues that Petfinder works with.

The inaugural "Puppy Bowl," which was promoted as an alternative to the Super Bowl, had 22 puppies and was watched by nearly 6 million viewers. Nearly 9 million tuned in last year and another 1.4 million watched via video streams, Toporoff said. "Puppy Bowl IX" will feature 84 animals, including 21 kittens from a New York shelter for the halftime show, and 63 puppies from 23 shelters.

Only four of the puppies have yet to find new homes, Toporoff said. They include Tyson, Daphne and Sacha ? three pit bull mixes from the Pitter Patter Animal Rescue in Silver Lake, Wis., ? and Jenny, a terrier mix from the Pitty Love Rescue in Rochester, N.Y.

"I don't know if there's any bigger forum for getting something out on adoption. We make sure the message gets out there. We make clear that these dogs need homes and that all animals have come to us during the adoption process," Toporoff said.

Fumble, last year's MVP winner, was adopted before the show aired. Michael Wright, of New York, said he found out about Fumble's participation toward the end of the adoption process. He planned to watch this year's show to catch any flashbacks of last year's MVP playing his heart out.

"I'm not really a fan of football," he said, adding that he has renamed Fumble to Toby. "He fits the name Toby. He is so cute. I like the name Fumble, but I pictured someone dropping the ball. He wasn't a Fumble," Wright said.

Each year, recruiting for the show is a logistical challenge for Kent and her crew of 80-plus. This year's show was particularly worrisome because taping was scheduled for October 2012 ? just after Superstorm Sandy hit the East Coast.

"We worried about the puppies, kittens and hedgehogs that may have been directly impacted or unable to travel due to Sandy," Kent said.

The New York studio where the game was supposed to be taped lost power, but the taping couldn't be postponed for too long given how quickly puppies grow. Another studio further uptown that had both power and space was found, and "amazingly, the crew was able to reschedule the shoot for only a week later and all the animals were still able to attend," Kent said.

Bernstein said they try to find rambunctious, energetic puppies to enter in the bowl though even if a dog falls asleep on its way to the end zone, it can be funny. Puppies chosen for the show have to be between 10 and 15 weeks old, healthy and sturdy enough to be on the field with playmates. All breeds are considered because "we try to reflect what's out there in the adoption world. A lot of those breeds are mixed," Toporoff said.

Producers also were trying to find ways to incorporate older animals into the show, since shelters have more trouble finding homes for them than they do puppies and kittens, Toporoff said.

As with all reality TV shows, the behind-the-scenes casting can lead to problems. Viewers often come in seeking a dog just like one on the show, and "then the lawyer brain kicks in, and you have to make sure you let everybody know not every dog plays football," said Bernstein, who is also an attorney. "People will adopt the kind of dog they see in the movie and they'll expect their Dalmatian to know how to use a word processor and not understand that was a cartoon."

"Some dogs like to play more than others. But don't come in thinking every Chihuahua can play football," she said.

The "Puppy Bowl" airs on Feb. 3 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in all time zones and will keep repeating until 3 a.m. The Super Bowl starts at 6:30 p.m. ET and 3:30 p.m. PT.

Syrian refugees top 700,000 as exodus swells: U.N

GENEVA (Reuters) - More than 700,000 Syrian refugees have registered in neighboring countries or await processing there, and aid workers are struggling to keep up with the exodus, the United Nations said on Tuesday.

"We have seen an unrelenting flow of refugees across all borders. We are running double shifts to register people," Sybella Wilkes, spokeswoman for the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), told Reuters in Geneva.

Jordan hosts 167,444 registered Syrian refugees, as well as 51,729 who await processing, many of who fled fighting around Deraa, according to UNHCR figures posted overnight that show an overall regional total of about 705,000 refugees as of January 27.

"We are trying to clear a backlog of people because the numbers have gone up so dramatically (in Jordan and Lebanon)," Wilkes said.

Lebanon has 157,139 Syrian refugees, as well as nearly 69,000 who await processing. "The needs are enormous, we can't get to everyone fast enough," Wilkes quoted Ninette Kelley, UNHCR representative in Lebanon, as saying on Tuesday.

Turkey has 163,161 Syrian refugees in its 15 camps while Iraq hosts 77,415. There are 14,312 in Egypt and 5,417 registered across the rest of North Africa, the agency said.

I want to share with you the two most powerful marketing methods I?ve found for the copywriter. And they are (drum roll please)?direct mail and? networking!

In my coaching program I have my students go through an intensive 24-session web/mail marketing program that gets them the high quality leads they need for financial and professional success.

However, as one of my previous students recently reminded me, networking is also a very strong marketing tool.

In fact, it was networking that got me my first clients, and it was direct mail that got me the right clients during the second phase of my freelance career.

Here?s what you need to know about networking?

Rule number one: Avoid the Chamber of Commerce!

Almost every copywriter I know (including me), automatically puts the Chamber of Commerce on the short list of good places to network. And almost every copywriter (myself included), is disappointed with the results.

Now I?m not saying the local Chamber is always a losing proposition; I have one past student who said Chamber networking paid off for him, but 99 percent of the copywriters I talk with agree the businesses found there are just too small (and usually clueless about direct marketing).

What?s more, the Chamber is comprised of many types of business, so niching is not possible.

It is much better to go to events and meetings that focus on marketing, like those of a local Direct Marketing Association and American Marketing Association. This is where you?ll find marketing directors, direct marketers, and marketing-related vendors likely to have a high interest in copywriting services.

When I first started my freelance career I joined the Oregon Direct Marketing Association and took every opportunity I could to get my name known.

I wrote the newsletter (and placed a free ad in the classifieds); I wrote the press releases and I accepted responsibilities for putting on the yearly conference. I even gave a speech on the proper elements of a good sales letter. And I put myself on the board.

All of this led to my first freelance clients: mini-cataloger and manufacturer Stash Tea, LawnPro, a small landscape maintenance firm, and an ad agency that locked me in a tiny room on site, as though to prevent me from making a personal call on their dime. Not the best clients, but it gave me my start.

Over the years, technology has made niche marketing the smart way to go, and for that reason I also highly recommend that you seek groups, organizations, trade shows, and associations that pertain to your niche.

Another one of my current students is niching into a very specialized area of the alternative health field. Within her unique niche she?s found huge trade shows she can attend, and is now making calls to vendors to introduce herself and let them know she?ll be stopping by their booth. The positive response she?s been getting has us both very excited!

Many copywriters find it difficult to network simply because they live remotely. For them, I like to point out online alternatives.

For instance, as a specialist in software who lives in California?s remote Palm Desert (near Palm Springs), I must seek online opportunities to network.

To this end I?ve participated in marketing forums on SoftwareCEO, a popular site for software execs. And I?ve also written articles for its newsletter.

I can report that networking on SoftwareCEO has paid off nicely, as a large chunk of last year?s income came from a client who saw my name there.

Online networking has another plus, and that?s that it?s an especially attractive route to take if you?re shy and have a difficult time of meeting people.

With online networking, all you have to do is answer a question, provide an opinion, or share a resource. It takes just a few minutes, you don?t have to dress up, or travel anywhere, and it doesn?t cost a thing!

In summary, there are many ways for copywriters to market themselves. Public speaking, writing articles, cold calling, running ads, and so on.

But most copywriters have neither the time nor the finances for multiple marketing efforts; most pick one or two methods that appeal to them, and work hard at making them effective.

One thing is sure: I wouldn?t be where I am now without networking. I found my copywriting mentor via networking and he taught me everything he knew.

With networking I made the connections that got me an agency job that changed the course of my career?and my life.

Reflecting on what networking has done for my career, I must wholeheartedly encourage my ambitious freelance friends to take advantage of its benefits.

I?ve often thought that in any business, it?s the people who make things happen. With networking, you can capitalize on this truism. You can develop relationships that last a lifetime?gain experiences that greatly impact your career?and enjoy rewards far beyond your initial imagination.

I encourage you to find networking opportunities, both online and off. Network consistently and I guarantee that when you?re ?fat and happy,? you?ll attribute some of your success to networking.

Baby Shower

Leah sporting an adorable "Mom-to-Be" sash!

Teen Mom 2 star Leah Messer Calvert is anxiously awaiting the birth of her third child next month, but her friends and family gathered today to celebrate the impending arrival with a baby shower!

Although Leah, who is expecting a little girl with her husband of nearly one year, Jeremy Calvert, arrived a tad late for her own shower, things seemed to go off wonderfully. The shower was planned by Leah?s mom, Dawn and Jeremy?s mom, Tammy.?

The Ashley has learned that there was a strict ?No Camera? policy at the shower. After a family ?friend? snuck a camera into Leah?s twins? birthday party one year and then sold the photos to a tabloid, Leah and her mom didn?t want to take any chances.

The Ashley has also learned that the shower was not captured by MTV cameras or attended by any of the show?s production staff, so fans will not get a chance to see this play out on ?Teen Mom 2.? Also missing were Leah?s ?Teen Mom 2? co-stars Kail Lowry, Chelsea Houska and Jenelle Evans.

Congrats to Leah and Jeremy!

Azerbaijan police arrest youths at anti-government protest

BAKU (Reuters) - Police arrested about 40 activists demonstrating in Azerbaijan's capital on Saturday against President Ilham Aliyev's government and voicing support for residents of a northern town where protests were crushed this week.

More than 100 protesters gathered in central Baku, some chanting "Freedom!" and calling for the resignation of Aliyev, who succeeded his father in 2003 and has tolerated little dissent in the oil-producing former Soviet republic.

Police swiftly stopped the protest, forcing demonstrators out of a park and then arresting some in the street.

The protest was triggered by unrest in Ismailli, about 200 km (125 miles) northwest of Baku, where police used teargas and water cannon on Thursday to disperse hundreds of protesters demanding the resignation of a regional leader. Cars were torched and a hotel set ablaze in a night of rioting.

The protests and rioting in the small town reflect frustration at what some Azeris see as an overbearing government, corruption and a big divide between rich and poor in the mostly Muslim Caspian Sea nation of nine million.

Western governments and human rights groups accuse Aliyev of rigging elections and clamping down on dissent, and he is expected to win a new presidential term in October.

Azerbaijan produces oil and gas and is part of a route for energy supplies to Europe that bypasses Russia.

Fire at nightclub kills more than 200 in Brazil

PORTO ALEGRE, Brazil (Reuters) - At least 200 people were killed in a nightclub fire in southern Brazil on Sunday after a band's pyrotechnics show set the building ablaze, and fleeing patrons were unable to find the emergency exits, local officials said.

Bodies were still being removed from the Kiss nightclub in the southern city of Santa Maria, Major Gerson da Rosa Ferreira, who was leading rescue efforts at the scene for the military police, told Reuters.

Local officials said 180 people were confirmed dead, and Ferreira said the death toll would rise above 200. He said the victims died of asphyxiation or from being trampled, and that there were possibly as many as 500 people inside the club when the fire broke out at about 2:30 a.m.

Television footage showed people sobbing outside the club, while shirtless firefighters used sledge hammers and axes to knock down an exterior wall to open up an exit.

"It was really fast. There was a lot of smoke, really dark smoke," survivor Aline Santos Silva, 29, told Globonews TV. "We were only able to get out quickly because we were in a VIP area close to the door."

President Dilma Rousseff cut short a visit to Chile and was returning to Brazil following the blaze, her spokesperson said.

Luiza Sousa, a civil police official in Santa Maria, told Reuters the blaze started when a member of the band or its production team ignited a flare, which then set fire to the ceiling. The fire spread "in seconds," Sousa said.

The disaster recalls other incidents including a 2003 fire at a nightclub in West Warwick, Rhode Island, that killed 100, and a Buenos Aires nightclub blaze in 2004 that killed nearly 200. In both incidents, a band or members of the audience ignited fires that set the establishment ablaze.

Brazil's safety standards and emergency response capabilities are under particular scrutiny as the country prepares to host the 2014 World Cup soccer tournament and the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Rio Grande do Sul state Health Secretary Ciro Simoni said emergency medical supplies from all over the state were being sent to the scene.

Santa Maria is some 186 miles west of the state capital of Porto Alegre. "A sad Sunday!" tweeted Rio Grande do Sul Governor Tarso Genro. He said "all possible measures" were being taken in response and that he was on his way to the scene.

Why Less Breast Cancer in Asia? | Care2 Healthy Living

Though breast cancer is the most common cancer among women around the world, the rate in some areas of the world, such as Asia, is up to six-fold lower than in North America. Maybe it?s the green tea and soy?

As I show in my 3-min. video Why Do Asian Women Have Less Breast Cancer?, if anything, green tea may only drop risk by about a third. Soy works better, but only, it appears, if you start young. Soy intake throughout the lifecycle is associated with decreased breast cancer risk, but the strongest, most consistent effect is for childhood intake, cutting the risk of later breast cancer by as much as half. If you don?t start consuming soy until your teens or adulthood, though, then soy is only associated with about a 25% drop in breast cancer risk.

Combined, green tea and soy consumption would only account for maybe for a two-fold difference in breast cancer risk?not 6-fold, so researchers looked into what else Asian women were eating. In my last Care2 post Mushrooms For Breast Cancer Prevention I presented evidence that plain, cheap, widely available white mushrooms appear able to outsmart breast cancer cells that try to make their own estrogen. That was based on placental tissue samples, though. Click on the NutritionFacts.org video pick above to see mushrooms stacked up against the real thing.

Given the intriguing mushroom experiments, researchers asked a thousand breast cancer patients how many mushrooms they ate. Then they asked the same question to a thousand healthy women who they tried to match to the cancer patients as closely as possible?same age, height, weight, exercise, smoking status, etc. Based on those answers they calculated that women who averaged at least a certain daily serving size of mushrooms appeared to drop their odds of getting breast cancer 64%! What was that average serving size? Half of a mushroom a day.

Who eats half a mushroom? Well, that was averaged over a month. So compared to women who didn?t regularly eat any mushrooms, those who ate just 15 a month appeared to dramatically lower their risk of breast cancer. Similar protection was found for dried mushrooms.

Combining mushroom consumption with green tea?sipping a half teabag?s worth of green tea every day along with eating that half a mushroom?was associated with nearly a 90% drop in breast cancer odds.

Green tea may also help account for the?Asian Paradox. Which type is best? See Antimutagenic Activity of Green Versus White Tea. And what may be the best way to prepare it? See?Cold Steeping Green Tea. I have another video on Breast Cancer Survival and Soy, though it may be possible to?overdo it.

    In health,
    Michael Greger, M.D.

    Hey Everybody

Okay, well, hi there. I'm usernamesareadrag, but, if you'd rather not type all of that out, I'd be just fine with you calling me Sempai. It's just a nickname from an old roleplaying sight that stuck, I suppose. I've been roleplaying for, oh man, eight years now? Well, eight years off and on, so don't expect anything glorious, on this one website. But it was too restrictive, wouldn't even let me say the word blood, and a friend recommended this site, so here I am.
I like all sorts of role-plays, so I'm willing to try just about anything if it sounds interesting and I can come up with a good character for it. So, I'm really looking forward to this site and having a ton of fun.

CRASS OR COMEDIC? Seth MacFarlane's sense of humor has ruffled some feathers but excited some Oscar fansCRASS OR COMEDIC? Seth MacFarlane's sense of humor has ruffled some feathers but excited some Oscar fans

MANILA, Philippines - Seth MacFarlane, the brains behind ?Family Guy? and the comedy film ?Ted,? will host the 85th Academy Awards on Feb 25, 2013.

He is the latest in the line of stars who have been given the honor of hosting the prestigious and glamorous ceremony. The list includes Billy Crystal (who has hosted 5 times), legends such as Frank Sinatra and Diana Ross, Whoopi Goldberg, Ellen Degeneres, Johnny Carson, and David Letterman.

MacFarlane said, "It's truly an overwhelming privilege to be asked to host the Oscars. My thoughts upon hearing the news were, one, I will do my utmost to live up to the high standards set forth by my predecessors; and two, I hope they don't find out I hosted the Charlie Sheen Roast.?

No stranger to awards himself?having won 2 Emmys for the animated series, ?Family Guy??MacFarlane was brought in by Oscars organizers to attract a younger audience for the revered awards ceremony.

Producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron quip, ?"We are thrilled to have Seth MacFarlane host the Oscars. His performing skills blend perfectly with our ideas for making the show entertaining and fresh. He will be the consummate host, and we are so happy to be working with him.?

MacFarlane made his directorial debut with the 2012 comedy ?Ted,? a film about a 30-something regular Joe (played by Mark Wahlberg) living with his foul-mouthed, pot-smoking teddy bear, voiced by MacFarlane himself.

The Oscars Youtube channel has just released 6 short promotional videos featuring MacFarlane. Here is one of them:

You can watch all 6 videos here.

    A preview

Oscar fans got a taste of MacFarlane?s hosting style when he announced the Oscar nominations alongside actress Emma Stone.

    Watch the nominations announcement here:

Critics had much to say about this preview.

New York Magazine?s Jesse David Fox of Vulture blog writes, ?A winking smirk is often a sign of an uncomfortable performer. This morning, SMacs (MacFarlane) incessantly shifted around and moved his head about, seeming very on-edge and a little stiff.?

Forrest Wickman of Slate.com wrote that ?In the less than ten minutes to announce the nominees MacFarlane managed to insult his co-presenter, belittle the achievements of several nominees, and make a Hitler joke.?

Pepsico Ditches BVO in Gatorade; Are You Still Drinking It?

According to the Associated Press, Pepsico, Inc., decided to remove brominated vegetable oil from Gatorade after customer complaints. The company does not plan to remove that ingredient from its sodas, including Mountain Dew.

The New York Times reported in December that a 15-year-old girl from Hattiesburg, Miss., Sarah Kavanaugh, spearheaded a Change.org petition addressed to Pepsico to remove BVO from Gatorade. Her petition garnered more than 200,000 signatures. But Pepsico denies its decision resulted from the petition, the AP said.

The Skinny on Brominated Vegetable Oil

What Is That Ingredient? says brominated vegetable oil is made by adding bromine to vegetable oil. It's patented as a flame retardant, according to Alternet. But when used in drinks, its purpose is to prevent the oil from separating from the other drink ingredients, What Is That Ingredient? says.

Because bromine is a halogen, it may displace iodine in the human body and may impair thyroid function. Case studies prior to 1975, when brominated sedatives were in use, indicated bromine may cause side effects that mimic psychosis and brain damage. These include depression, memory loss, hallucinations, violent tendencies, seizures, cerebral atrophy, acute irritability, tremors, ataxia, confusion, loss of peripheral vision, slurred speech, stupor, tendon reflex changes, photophobia due to enlarged pupils, and extensor plantar responses..

Animal studies link bromide consumption to heart and kidney damage and fat deposits in those organs. In extreme cases, it's produced testicular damage, stunted growth, lethargy, and fatigue in animals, What Is That Ingredient? says.

    Other Products Containing BVO

The New York Times says about 10 percent of drinks in the United States contain BVO. The substance is banned in the European Union and Japan, according to the AP. Soft drinks containing BVO include Powerade, Fanta Orange, Fresca, Squirt, Sunkist Peach and Sunkist Pineapple.

    Regulatory Status

The Food and Drug Administration allows the use of BVO in soft drinks. That hasn't always been the case. Although used as far back as 1931, the substance was removed from the agency's safe additives list in 1970, Alternet reports. Later that decade, an industry group conducted studies used to support an industry petition that resulted in BVO's return to the FDA's Generally Recognized as Safe list at 15 ppm in fruit-flavored beverages. The agency found use at that level did not cause the adverse effects observed at higher concentrations. This was an interim decision, and to this day, it remains under that tentative classification.

Beverage industry, NYC lawyers duel over drinks

NEW YORK (AP) ? The city defended its groundbreaking size limit on sugary drinks Wednesday as an imperfect but meaningful rein on obesity, while critics said it would hurt small and minority-owned businesses while doing little to help health.

The first courtroom arguments in the closely watched case ended without an immediate ruling. Opponents said they planned to ask a judge to delay enforcement during the suit, which has broached questions of racial fairness alongside arguments about government authority and burdens to business.

The NAACP's New York state branch and a network of Hispanic groups have joined a legal effort to block the first-of-its-kind restriction, igniting questions Wednesday about the groups' ties to the beverage industry.

Beverage makers, restaurateurs, minority advocates and other critics told a judge the upcoming 16-ounce limit was a finger-wagging incursion on consumer choice, rife with inconsistencies that would cost a hot dog vendor business while still allowing New Yorkers to buy belly-buster sodas at the chain convenience store next to him. Opponents' lawyers called it "ham-handed," ''grossly unfair" and just "plain silly."

"New Yorkers do not want to be told what to drink," attorney James Brandt said.

City lawyers acknowledged the rule's limitations. It doesn't apply to all high-calorie drinks or all places that sell them, largely because of the city can regulate only some establishments. But it's still a reasonable and needed move to take on the city's growing weight problem and the diseases linked to it, they said.

"While this may not be a silver bullet that will cure the obesity epidemic, it's rational ... (and) one step that can be taken," said the city Health Department's chief lawyer, Thomas Merrill.

The suit, filed by the American Beverage Association and others, seeks to block the restriction, set to take effect March 12. With no immediate ruling Wednesday, opponents said they planned to ask state Supreme Court Justice Milton Tingling to put it on hold until the case is decided. The city will oppose such a move, Merrill said after the hearing.

The latest in a line of healthy-eating initiatives during Mayor Michael Bloomberg's administration, the beverage rule bars restaurants and many other eateries from selling high-sugar drinks in cups or containers bigger than 16 ounces. Violations could bring $200 fines; the city doesn't plan to start seeking those until June.

In explaining the cola crackdown, officials cite the city's rising obesity rate ? about 24 percent of adults, up from 18 percent in 2002 ? and point to studies linking sugary drinks to weight gain. Care for obesity-related illnesses costs more than $4.7 billion a year citywide, and government programs pay about 60 percent of that, according to city Health Commissioner Dr. Thomas Farley.

Opponents portray the regulation as government nagging that scapegoats sugary drinks for a multifaceted fat problem, and they say the restriction is unfairly narrow.

Unsweetened juice and milk-based drinks are excluded; health officials say they have nutritional value. The regulation also doesn't cover alcoholic drinks or sales at supermarkets and many convenience stores ? among them 7-Eleven, home of the Big Gulp ? because they aren't subject to city health rules.

The NAACP and the Hispanic Federation, an organization of 100 Northeastern groups, say their concern is that minority-owned delis and corner stores will end up at a disadvantage compared with grocery chains.

It's a complaint voiced behind deli counters in heavily Hispanic East Harlem, where managers such as Yolanda Peralta see the restriction as inequitable.

"We're paying taxes like every other store. ... We should have the same rights that everybody else," Peralta said Wednesday.

But others questioned the advocacy groups' links to the soda companies whose fight they've joined. Among the ties:

? Coca-Cola announced last month it was giving a $100,000 grant to the national NAACP to support a healthy-lifestyles program

? PepsiCo gave the group more than $10,000 in 2010, according to the soda maker's website.

? Former Hispanic Federation President Lillian Rodriguez Lopez left for a job at Coca-Cola in in February.

? The groups were represented Wednesday by a firm that also has represented Coca-Cola. The firm, King & Spalding, is representing the advocacy groups for free, lawyer Ann M. Cook said.

Given that obesity rates are higher than average among blacks and Hispanics, the NAACP should refuse soda makers' money and "reevaluate the position the group is taking in New York City," Michael F. Jacobson, the executive director of the nutrition advocacy group Center for Science in the Public Interest, said in a statement Wednesday.

He and Stan Glantz, director of the Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education at the University of California, San Francisco, noted that tobacco companies' established relationship with African-American leadership organizations in decades past.

The strategy in the soda fight is "straight out of tobacco," Glantz said.

Hazel Dukes, the NAACP's New York president, bristled at the idea that the nearly 104-year-old group was swayed by the soda industry's support.

"No one buys the NAACP," she said in a telephone interview, noting that foundations also have contributed to the organization's obesity-fighting initiatives.

Soda makers' money "is not the issue here," she said. "The issue is fairness."

The Hispanic Federation's current president, Jose Calderon, didn't immediately return calls Tuesday and Wednesday.

Purchase, N.Y.-based PepsiCo Inc. declined to comment on Wednesday and Atlanta-based Coca-Cola Co. referred questions to the American Beverage Association.

The regulation's critics also argue that the first-of-its-kind restriction should have gone before the elected City Council instead of being approved by the Bloomberg-appointed Board of Health, a view echoed Wednesday by a lawyer for nine of the 51 council members. The city says the board of doctors and other health professionals had both the authority and expertise to make the decision.

During Bloomberg's 11-year tenure, the city also has made chain restaurants post calorie counts on their menus and barred artificial trans fats in French fries and other restaurant food.
