After a long hiatus, the new season of "Community" kicked off, and it looked quite a bit different. In what TV.com thought was a clever nod to the behind-the-scenes drama, the Season 4 premiere featured a show-within-the-show, or more specifically, a show within Abed's mind -- one that featured Fred Willard instead of Chevy Chase.
Abed was stressing about this being their senior year -- and thus their last year together -- and so he was encouraged to find a happy place inside his mind. That place was a lot like a traditional sitcom, complete with a laugh track. Was this "a recognition of how Community might be if NBC had its way completely with the show," as TV.com wrote?
Series creator and showrunner Dan Harmon was fired after Season 3, thus making this the first episode without his unique and strange creative vision steering the ship. While there were some differences in tone and presentation, one thing that didn't change was the surreal craziness of the whole thing.
What did you think of the Harmon-less "Community"? Share your thoughts in the comments.
Senior year of "Community" continues on Thursdays at 8 p.m. EST on NBC.
