Facebook Is Done Giving Its Precious Social Graph To Competitors

Facebook Social GraphOf all Facebook's data sets, it's the social graph that's truly unique. It's spent nine years getting you to confirm who you know, and apparently it's sick of handing over your friend list to competitors. This week it?cut off?both Twitter's new photo app Vine and messaging app Voxer from Find Friends, Facebook's API that lets you connect with Facebook friends on other apps. But this could backfire

Apple's profit rocket hits air pocket

(AP) ? Apple's blockbuster revenue growth is slowing drastically, as iPhone sales plateau and the company finds itself lacking revolutionary new products.

The company's warning, issued Wednesday as part of its financial results for the holiday quarter, sent Apple Inc.'s stock plunging by more than 10 percent, wiping out a year's worth of gains.

Analysts said the warning suggested Apple can no longer sustain its growth without some completely new products. Its last revolutionary creation, the iPad, was launched in 2010. Co-founder Steve Jobs, who was the engine behind the creation of the iPod, iPhone and iPad, died in 2011.

"It has been an overriding concern with Apple that they would not be able to generate revenue growth just rolling out new versions of old products," said Jeff Sica, president and chief investment officer of SICA Wealth Management. "Now they've proven it in their numbers."

On a conference call with analysts, Apple CEO Tim Cook rebutted that idea, but as usual, gave no details.

"We're working on some incredible stuff. The pipeline is chock full," he said.

Before he died in 2011, Apple co-founder Steve Jobs told biographer Walter Isaacson that he had figured out how to create a groundbreaking, easy-to-use TV set. Since then, company watchers have been waiting for the company to bring out something in that vein to re-energize sales. Cook said the company was still working on it.

"I tend to believe that there's a lot we can contribute in the space, and so we continue to pull the string and see where it leads us," he said.

Apple said it expects sales of between $41 billion and $43 billion in the current quarter, which ends in March. That would usually be little cause for concern, even though analysts were expecting $45.6 billion, because Apple usually lowballs its forecasts. But Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer said the company is changing its practices and providing a reasonable range rather than a single, easily achievable number.

That means Apple is looking at sales growth of about 7 percent from last year's January to March quarter, a striking number for a company that's posted double-digit increases in every quarter except one since 2008.

Apple's stock fell $55.58 to $458.43 in extended trading, after the release of the results. The shares are down 35 percent from their all-time high, hit Sept. 21, when the iPhone 5 launched.

Fueled by earlier versions of the iPhone, Apple's market capitalization decisively overtook that of Exxon Mobil in early 2012, making it the world's most valuable company. With Wednesday's drop, Apple is worth just 5 percent more than Exxon.

Apple's enviable profit growth also hit a wall in the October to December quarter. It said net income in the fiscal first quarter was $13.1 billion, or $13.81 per share, flat with a year ago. That still beat expectations, as analysts polled by FactSet had forecast earnings of $13.48 per share.

Revenue was $54.5 billion, up 18 percent from a year ago. Analysts were expecting $55 billion. Sales were held back by the fact that the latest quarter had 13 weeks, one less than the corresponding 2011 quarter.

Apple shipped 47.8 million iPhones in the quarter, about 1 million less than analysts were expecting, and 22.9 million iPads, also about 1 million short.

Most surprisingly, Mac sales were also 1 million short, at 4.1 million. That's a 22 percent drop from shipments a year ago. Oppenheimer said this was because Apple couldn't get the new iMac desktops out before December.

Cook said iPhone supplies were short too, and the company could have sold more of both the iPhone 5 and older iPhone 4 if it had been able to make more.

Most technology companies would be ecstatic if they posted 18 percent sales growth and $13 billion in profit for a single quarter, but Apple is held to a high standard, set by the shocking, iPhone-propelled success of the last few years.

"Apple has been growing tremendously and that level of growth can't be sustained by any company," said Sarah Rotman Epps, senior analyst at Forrester Research.

Investors have already been concerned that Apple's strategy of keeping the price of the iPhone high means it's losing out on sales, particularly overseas. Consumers are instead opting to buy cheaper smartphones running Google Inc.'s Android software, which has propelled South Korea's Samsung Electronics to the world's largest maker of smartphones. The average wholesale price of the iPhone is $640, hundreds of dollars more than smartphones with comparable hardware.

There's speculation among company watchers that the company will produce a cheaper iPhone, but that would cut into its profit margin and could tarnish the company's image as a purveyor of premium products.

Apple had warned that the holiday quarter's profits would be lower than Wall Street was initially expecting, because it had so many new products coming out, including the iPhone 5 and iPad Mini. New production lines are more expensive to run and yield more defective products that need to be redone or thrown out rather than sold.

Ways Parents Can Take Responsibility for Child Obesity | Your ...

From Your Health Journal?..?The Huffington Post has some amazing writers, and I did enjoy Debbie Gisonni?s post recently about how parents can take responsibility for childhood obesity. This has always been a very touchy area. I have seen the media come down pretty hard on parents with obese children, almost claiming it is a form of child abuse. On the other hand, I have also seen other forms of media take a different approach in an effort to give support and information to parents. The author of this article makes many valid points, I feel, in an educated manner. She also states, ?There?s a reason why children live with parents until they become adults. They aren?t capable of taking care of themselves. Their brains aren?t even fully developed until their mid-20s, so up until then, good judgment is compromised.? A child?s environment has changed over the last 25 years, and we cannot raise children the same way our parents did ? meaning adjustments must be made to a child?s lifestyle to help them lead a healthy lifestyle, starting with the parents. Do I think having an overweight child is a form of child abuse. Absolutely not! Do I think a parent can help a child lead a healthier lifestyle. Absolutely yes! But, it is a team effort from everyone in a child?s life.?

From the article?..

The Biggest Loser weight loss reality show kicked off 2013 with a kid?s edition to help end childhood obesity. First lady Michelle Obama has been traveling the country educating kids and communities on nutrition and exercise. Numerous health and state organizations have followed suit with similar programs and campaigns.

While it?s encouraging to see so many community leaders (yes, reality shows do influence the public) taking the issue of childhood obesity to heart, ultimately, this is a parent?s responsibility. As a parent or guardian, you have a choice ? to be a contributor to child obesity or be a role model for healthy living. There?s a reason why children live with parents until they become adults. They aren?t capable of taking care of themselves. Their brains aren?t even fully developed until their mid-20s, so up until then, good judgment is compromised.

Only a generation ago, family dinners were eaten together, school lunches were homemade and pre-packaged or fast food was the exception rather than the rule for meals. Kids actually played (meaning they moved their body in some way) outside every day. So, it?s easy to blame child obesity on changing times. Today?s dual income, tech-centric, over-scheduled families who consume highly processed meals without any form of regular exercise makes living a healthy lifestyle difficult at best. But then again, even my generation of kids had temptations. We could have sat in front of the TV eating TV dinners all day, but we didn?t. We didn?t because it wasn?t allowed. There were rules and boundaries set by our parents that prohibited laziness and bad eating. I wasn?t even allowed to get a snack out of the kitchen without permission from my mother!

If you want your children to be healthy and fit kids and adults, you need to set boundaries and be the best role model you can.

Here are 10 ways you can take responsibility for your child?s health and well-being:

A New Perspective On Treating Late-Stage Cancer ? CBS Philly

(credit: Joe Raedle/Getty Images)

(credit: Joe Raedle/Getty Images)

By Dr. Brian McDonough, Medical Editor

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - You may remember reading about Dr. James Watson. He is one of the scientists behind the Watson and Crick work that gave us a detailed look at DNA and its double-stranded helix ? clearly a major scientific breakthrough in the 20th century. Well, he just wrote a paper which he thinks is equally, if not more important, and you have to listen to James Watson. He takes a look at curing late stage cancers.

Watson argues?that the overproduction of antioxidants may be the reason why certain advanced cancers have been hard to treat.
What he says is counter to what has been touted in the past, antioxidant consumption may not lead to less cancer and may actually promote cancer progression in late stage cancers. Watson argues that finding ways to reduce antioxidant levels may help treat or even cure late-stage cancers.

Of course he needs to back this up with scientific evidence.

Off Campus Student Housing Worries For First Timers | Real Estate ...

student off campus housing fears

Meathead Movers Source: Flickr

Moving off campus can be an anxious experience for students. Off-campus housing provides the closest experience to living in the real world. For many students, this is the first step towards independence. There are no R.A.s to hold their hand throughout the semester, or dinning halls a short walk away.

Learn from the dorms and help ease student?s anxiety about living off campus by addressing these three concerns.

Concern One: Living Off Campus

The primary concern of students is where the house is located in relation to classes and other extracurricular activities. Providing students with honest time estimates to important campus locations is important to solidifying a deal. Slipping this piece of information in while showing off the house is an easy way to give students context. You can even throw in the Zillow Walk Score for a credible number of things to do close by.

Concern Two: Cooking

Many students delight in having a kitchen to perfect their culinary skills. But there remain a select few that are mageirocophobic (fear cooking). Once again you can consult the Zillow Walk Score for close restaurants to the unit, or you can reference other good places for food in the area.

Even for students not afraid of the kitchen, knowing that there are good places to eat nearby is hugely influential in choosing an off campus house.

Concern Three: Paying Bills

Electricity. Gas. Internet. Cable. There are numerous bills for students that have never lived outside of the dorms or their parent?s home. There are two ways to handle bills, each with its own pros and cons.

The first method is to estimate your apartment utility costs and bundle them into the rent for the month. This removes the most anxiety for students because they pay one price every month, directly to you. It?s clean and easy. Leave a buffer to protect yourself from students using more heat or electricity. If you choose this method, also be aware of sticker shock when showing your home because your rent will probably be higher than others around you that do not bundle utilities into the rent.

The other option is to just charge for rent and leave utilities up to the students. While this may not help with the anxious off-campus first timer, it minimizes your work. If this is the route you choose, help students out by letting them know how previous tenants dealt with utilities.

Long story short, ease their anxieties. After all, this will be their home for the next year.

HOUSTON (AP) ? A shooting on a Texas community college campus wounded three people Tuesday and sent students fleeing for safety as officials placed the campus on lockdown, officials said.

Harris County Sheriff's Maj. Armando Tello said authorities had detained a person of interest. He did not provide any details about the people who were wounded, such as whether they were students or included the person who was arrested.

Authorities thought there could be a second shooter, according to a law enforcement official in Washington who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the ongoing case.

The school's official Twitter feed said the shooting was between two people and that the situation was under control. It had issued an alert on its website earlier, telling students and faculty to take immediate shelter or avoid the campus.

Aerial footage from local television stations showed police cars and ambulances parked on the Lone Star College System campus about 20 miles north of downtown Houston. Emergency personnel could be seen tending to people on stretchers, while others ran from a building led by officers.

Mark Smith, spokesman for the Harris County Emergency Corps, said four people were taken to two hospitals. He said at least two had gunshot wounds, and one appeared to have had a heart attack related to the shooting. He said one was in critical condition.

Relatives identified Jody Neal, 24, as one of the people who was shot and said he was taken to Harris Health Ben Taub Hospital Emergency Center with gunshots in his arm, stomach and leg.

"He was sitting in the study room. There (were) three people on the computer and a guy walked up the stairs and opened fire on him," Stacy Neal, Jody's sister, told KPRC-TV. "They said it was just one guy that came in with a gun."

Other students said they were studying or waiting for classes to start when they heard gunfire about 12:30 p.m.

"I didn't think they were shots," said Daniel Flores, 19. "It sounded like someone was kicking a door."

He was in a second-floor tutoring lab with about 60 people. Once they realized the sound was gunfire, they fled to the nearby student services center, where authorities kept them for about 30 minutes before letting them go, Flores said.

Cody Harris, 20, said he was in a classroom with about six or seven other students waiting for a psychology class to start when he heard eight shots. He and other students looked at each other, said "I guess we should get out of here," and fled.

"I was just worried about getting out," Harris said. "I called my grandmother and asked her to pick me up."

The shooting comes one month after a gunman attacked an elementary school in Newtown, Conn., killing 20 children and heightening security concerns at campuses across the country. In Texas, several school districts have either implemented or are considering a plan to allow faculty to carry guns on campus. The Texas Legislature this year may also debate a bill that would allow guns on college campuses.

The Lone Star College System has an enrollment of 90,000 students and six college campuses, according to its website. Its programs in Harris County include training to be a paramedic.

Mark Zaragosa said he had just come out of an EMT class when he saw two people who were injured and stopped to help them. Officers had not yet arrived, he said.

"The two people that I took care of had just minor injuries," Zaragosa told KHOU. "One gentleman had a gunshot to the knee and the (other) actually had an entry wound to the lower buttocks area."

Keisha Cohn, 27, who also is studying to be a paramedic, said she was inside a building about 50 feet away from where the shots were fired. She heard "no less than five" shots and started running.

She fled to the learning center, which houses computers and study areas. Eventually, a deputy showed up and escorted people out, she said. She left her car on the campus, which was evacuated and closed for the rest of the day.
