Charles Addams, the American cartoonist who created the Addams family, has been commemorated in a Google doodle celebrating the centenary of his birth on 7 January.

Addams, who was bornin Westfield, New Jersey in 1912, had a fondness from a young age for coffins, skeletons and tombstones and went on to become known for the black humour of his cartoons, many of which regularly appeared in the New Yorker.

His first cartoon was published in the magazine in 1935, long before his particular take on macabre fun went mainstream.

The Addams Family, including Gomez, Morticia, Uncle Fester, Lurch, Grandmama, Wednesday, Pugsley, and Thing, were recurring characters who originally appeared separately.

After members of the family first started to appear in the late 30s, they were adapted for television shows and film. In one recent incarnation, Brooke Shields played Morticia in a Broadway musical.

Addams, who died of a heart attack in 1988, had been married three times and was also remembered for having a penchant for the grim in his personal life.

His marriage to Marilyn Matthews Miller in 1980 took place in a cemetery for pets, while the bride wore a black dress and carried a black feather fan.

The Google doodle in his memory was created courtesy of the Tee & Charles Addams Foundation.

ASUS promises Windows 8 on ARM tablet, 3G Transformer Prime, 7-inch Eee Memo Pad

ASUS
We're still days away from CES but the promises show no signs of slowing down. ASUS is the latest, hosting a Taipei event in which its representatives rattled off a long list of fabulous devices to whet your appetite. First up is a 3G version of the Transformer Prime, presumably boasting some more capable AGPS onboard. We're told the 7-inch Eee Memo Pad will be on display here at CES as well but, most interestingly, that a tablet running Windows 8 on ARM is coming a little further down the road. It's said to be at least similar in design to the Prime but an indicated release of late 2012 sadly leaves us wanting.

ASUS promises Windows 8 on ARM tablet, 3G Transformer Prime, 7-inch Eee Memo Pad originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 07 Jan 2012 11:09:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

Wedding Dresses Destroyed by Priscilla of Boston (Video)

Bridal boutique Priscilla of Boston closed its doors, and people were shocked to find out that the store actually destroyed wedding dresses. The shocking footage went viral, and many people were disgusted by the waste. How many people could use a wedding gown? If this store had donated them instead of destroying them, it would have done some good.

Wedding Dresses Destroyed by Priscilla of Boston (Video)Priscilla of Boston actually spray painted the lovely white wedding dresses to keep people from being able to use them, which seems unbelievable. The boutique is part of David's Bridal, and the company issued a statement that said, "Like many of you, we were disheartened by imagery of a small number of unsold bridal gowns being destroyed following a Priscilla of Boston salon closure in the Midwest. While it has been Priscilla of Boston's policy not to make donations of sample dresses that are in poor condition, we recognize that some of these dresses could possibly have gone to worthy causes. David's Bridal has already begun bringing together all of the remaining Priscilla of Boston gowns to evaluate them and ensure that they are donated to our charitable partners wherever possible."

What do you think about this? Is it too little too late? What would cause the closing boutique to actually destroy these thousands of dollars worth of wedding dresses just because they are closing? Why didn't they do something else more productive with them? It just does not make any sense at all. Do you understand why they did it? Do you think the fact that the rest will be donated is enough? The video below shows some of the damage.

95% Knuckle

Like many great documentaries, Knuckle was born out of something else. It originally began as a wedding video. Ian Palmer found something so interesting about his guests, he ventured further and discovered the world of Irish travelling bare knuckle boxing. Most specifically he follows the feud between two clans of the same family, The McDonaghs and the Joyces. So after that wedding video, Palmer ended up documenting this feud and these fights for 12 years. This extraordinary amount of time puts the whole thing into perspective about the needlessness and absurdity of violence. Many say the feud goes back 50 years, and yet nobody gives a straight answer as to its origins. People hold grudges and plan rematches 9 years down the line. It becomes obvious that fighting has become an addiction and a way of life for these poor men. They have nothing else to do. When we see the acclaim they receive from their families, it's easy to see why they have been so taken in by aggression. In the first fight James McDonagh says it will be his last, but it's far from it. He seems genuine about his wanting to quit, but he always ends up in another fight. Even the director talks about how he continued filming just for the thrill, and had lost sight of his documentary. Every fight is brutal in that realistic sense, and Palmer clearly paints a vivid picture of this strange world. Aggressive men, but loving husbands and fathers. Fights that are fought for lack of reason, but are controlled and fair with a sense of honour. Knuckle is the kind of film that lures you in with basic blood lust, but gives you a whole lot more.

Samsung Releases Galaxy 3GS, Or Something

IconHold on to your panties, because this should come as a surprise: I'm actually agreeing that Samsung is copying Apple. The Korean company just released a new entry-level Android smartphone, and it's called the Samsung Galaxy Ace Plus. While Apple's previous complaints regarding Samsung's supposed copying were obviously nonsense, this Galaxy Ace Plus, on the other hand... It's almost as if Samsung is giving Apple the finger by copying the iPhone 3G(S) almost verbatim.

Previous Samsung phones and tablets were drastically different from Apple's devices, making Apple's claims to the contrary a bit hollow to those with no special affinity for any one company. This time around, however, there's no denying the obvious: the Galaxy Ace Plus is an almost 1:1 copy of the iPhone 3G and 3GS.

The story I'm linking to is a bit funny, since it's acting as if this is the first time Apple and its fanatics are accusing Samsung of copying the 3G(S) - even though basically all Apple's complaints deal with the 3G(S). The fact that the Galaxy Ace Plus looks so much like the 3GS just demonstrates how wrong they were when it comes to calling, say, the Galaxy SII a 3GS rip-off.

In all seriousness, this time around, the likeness is so striking you can't really ignore it. I wonder how Samsung ever thought this was a good idea - especially now that Apple is busier filing lawsuits than unveiling products. This might surprise you, but in this case, I would say Apple is well within its right to sue Samsung.

I'd love to know Samsung's thought process here. Unbelievable.

Boeing to close Wichita facility before end of 2013, move tanker work to Texas, Okla., Wash.

WICHITA, Kan. - The Boeing Co. has told its employees that it plans to close its massive defense plant in Wichita by the end of 2013 in a bid to cut costs in a tight market for defense spending.

Wednesday's announcement means the loss of 2,100 well-paying jobs at its Kansas facility, which was once considered the centerpiece of Wichita's claim as the air capital of the world.

It also dashes hopes for an additional 7,500 direct and indirect jobs that the company once promised to bring to Wichita with the Air Force air refueling tanker contract.

The work will move to Boeing facilities in Texas, Oklahoma and Washington.

Job reductions at the Wichita facility are scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2012.
